How the ENEM score calculation works
The final ENEM score used by systems such as SISU, PROUNI and FIES is a weighted average of the 5 knowledge areas. Each university and course assigns different weights to each test, reflecting how important that area is for the profession.
The formula is:
Average = (LC × w₁ + CH × w₂ + CN × w₃ + MT × w₄ + RED × w₅)
÷ (w₁ + w₂ + w₃ + w₄ + w₅)Where LC, CH, CN, MT, RED are the scores and w₁ to w₅ are the weights. When all weights are 1, the average is simply arithmetic.
Example: Medicine at USP
Typical weights: LC=1, CH=1, CN=4, MT=1, RED=3 (sum = 10). A student with scores LC=700, CH=720, CN=850, MT=680, RED=900:
Average = (700×1 + 720×1 + 850×4 + 680×1 + 900×3) ÷ 10
= (700 + 720 + 3400 + 680 + 2700) ÷ 10
= 8200 ÷ 10
= 820 pointsNotice how the CN result pulled the average up thanks to weight 4 — in Medicine, that can be the difference between getting in or not.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the ENEM weighted average?
Multiply each score by the weight of the area for the desired course, add up the results and divide by the sum of the weights. The formula is Average = (LC·w₁ + CH·w₂ + CN·w₃ + MT·w₄ + RED·w₅) ÷ (w₁+w₂+w₃+w₄+w₅).
What is the minimum ENEM score to get into a public university?
There is no absolute minimum score — it depends on how competitive the course is. Averages above 700 open many doors; Medicine at top universities usually asks for 800 or more.
Does the calculator work for SISU, PROUNI and FIES?
Yes. The weighted average calculated is the one SISU, PROUNI and FIES use to rank candidates. Each course has specific weights set by the universities.
Does the calculator consider IRT (Item Response Theory)?
No. INEP uses IRT to compute the score of each test. This calculator works with the final IRT score (the one on your score report, from 0 to 1000) and computes the weighted average.
Can I use custom weights?
Yes. Select “Custom weights” or adjust manually by clicking “Edit weights”. Weights range from 0 to 10.
Does my course’s cutoff score use these weights?
Each university and course sets its own weights. Check the call for applications or the official SISU portal. The presets here are typical examples from large universities.
Is the essay weight fixed?
No. Courses set the essay weight. In Languages, Law and Journalism the essay usually has weight 3 to 4. In Engineering, weight 1 or 2.
Why does the simple average differ from the weighted one?
Because the weighted average values the areas that matter most for the chosen course. If you did best in the high-weight areas, the weighted average will be higher than the simple one — and vice versa.
